La Paz to Sun Island,
Lake Titicaca.
Collected by bus and transferred to Catamaran on Lake
Titicaca (3812m above sea level). Highest navigable lake in the world. Few hours transfer to Sun Island where we
docked and walked around the Island with guide. Small Inca settlements and
views of agricultural terraces with fabulous views across the lake and
islands. Good preparation walk for the
Inca trail – steep hills and irregular terrain.
Small town at the very top ( 60 m up )with lots of restaurant/cafes and
hostels. No vehicles of any sort on
island so shanks’ pony or donkey to transport anything. Interesting museum on way down which
explained the textiles and clothing of the indigenous community, plus how they
built the reed boats (as per Thor Heyerdal).
Had a blessing from resident ‘priest/shayman’ who burnt a plate of
offerings for pachamamma.
Went on a
tourist reed boat where we played around pretending that we were rowing the
boat. Good for a few photos! Dropped off
at another jetty where we boarded another catamaran which was to be our
accommodation.
We were the only clients
and had a very cosy double bed and en-suite toilet/shower room each. Dinner was a full three course affair with
candles on the tables, all facing forward so we could see a juvenile ‘three
tenors’ concert on the TV. Very comfortable and posh. We should have moored at the north of the island
but unfortunately the two main tribes were arguing as to who should be entitled
to the mooring fees and had started to set fire to the other’s cabanas. So we decided to moor at Cobacabana, in the grounds
of a naval establishment, where it was safe and very calm waters, in all
senses.
