Buenos Aires – Boca Junior Stadium, Boca, San Telmo.
Walking tour around Boca area – very bohemian and touristy
with multi-coloured corrugated iron shacks which were where the new immigrants
landed and had cheap accommodation until they settled. Lots of street cafes,
with singers and tango dancers providing entertainment with a minimal service
charge/tip. Various weird and wonderful
museums and shops. Some spectacular graffiti and quirky statues adorning the
whole area. Lovely during the day, but
not where you would want to be at night.
Lunchtime tour around the Boca Juniors Football Stadium. I’d
never heard of them, but Iain was getting excited. I liked the gamesmanship involved: the
opposing fans were located at the top of the huge stadium – in full sun (gets
to 40 degrees), with only one toilet for about 5000 fans. The opposing team
changing rooms were below the Boca ‘12’ fans, who were the twelfth member of
the team and were expected to turn up early and jump around, chanting – with
the sound reverberating through the (grotty) changing rooms. The Boca team
changing rooms were luxurious by comparison. Iain walked on the hallowed turf –
Loretta and I had a glass of wine!
Started to rain, so we cut the tour short and got ready to
go out for the evening. Booked the
Tortoni Tango show. No taxis available
in the pouring rain so met up with others of our group and started walking.
Finally hailed a taxi and our gentlemen (Iain and Ed) put us ladies in the cab
and had to walk the whole way.
The show was superb. Serious tango dancing (no idea what the
dialogue was about and the singer was OK), but the ambiance and dancing skill
was mesmerising. Had a light dinner/wine
whilst watching the show from just one table back from the stage.
