Buenos Aires to San Carlos de la Bariloche. Airport for 2.5 hour domestic flight. Lovely
views over South America – deserts, salt lakes, mountains until finally the
first views of the Andes range, and some snow-capped mountains. Very little
sign of any towns, including not seeing the airport until virtually landing.
Short transfer into town which was relatively small. Our
walking tour of the town consisted of various recommendations for the local delicacies
– smoked trout, lamb (not beef), micro-brewery beer, chocolate and
ice-cream. The town was founded by
Germans/Swiss, hence the chocolate. Also
most of the architecture was based on Alpine-type buildings. Still had the ‘handkerchiefs’ painted on to
the floor of the main plaza to remember the ‘disappeared’. Our guide didn’t see
fit to mention it, but did when pushed saying that he would prefer if there was
a monument – worrying that he seemed to be keeping the politics away from the
tourists. We ended up in Familia Weiss,
a lovely pub/restaurant built in wood, close to the lake. Ate a ‘family
platter’ of smoked salmon, trout, soused venison, wild boar, pickles, pate etc.
washed down with a Malbec. Very nice!
